Scientists Create Tiny Stomachs From Stem Cells

WEDNESDAY, Oct. 29, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Scientists who used stem cells to create miniature human stomachs within the laboratory say their breakthrough seem give a new way to learn more about the advancement and treatment of stomach diseases.
The team used human pluripotent stem cells — which can become any type of cell in the body — to grow the utilitarian miniature stomachs, to study disease by H. pylori bacteria, a major cause of ulcers and stomach cancer.
The miniature stomachs offer many research openings, including modeling early stages of stomach cancer, creating new drugs and learning more about obesity-related diabetes, according to vital investigator Jim Wells. He’s a scientist within the formative science and endocrinology divisions at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Therapeutic Center.
“Until this consider, no one had produced gastric [stomach] cells from human pluripotent stem cells. In expansion, we found how to promote arrangement of three-dimensional gastric tissue with complex architecture and cellular composition,” he said in a restorative center news release.
The ability to form human stomachs in the lab is critical since significant auxiliary contrasts in mouse stomachs make them less than ideal for examining human stomach advancement and illness, Wells explained.
The study was distributed Oct. 29 within the journal Nature.
